An Arrow Pointing To Heaven::Chapter 1
- Have you ever wanted to explore your roots? Why? How far back have you seen? And how do you think this quest might be different if you are adopted?
- How do/did your parents affect who you are today? And how do you think you are affecting your children?
- How did Rich come to truly know and understand his father? Why did it take this one particular event to make it clear?
- What have you done to try to better understand your parents?
- How much influence of our parents is genetic? How much is social?
- Read aloud the lyrics to First Family. What things come to mind while reading it?
- What does it mean to "honor" our father and mother? Should we then also "honor" our children? If so, how?
- Now consider the letter Rich wrote "from" his Dad to himself. Reactions? Why do you think it was so hard for Rich to write this?
- Are there things about you that your parents did not like? Why? And have we "returned the favor" with our own children?
- What does it feel like to be an "outsider?" How did it influence Rich?
- On p. 25, Bryan says Rich "...was too saintly for the sinners and too sinful for the saints." How can this be? Ever felt this way?
- What is home? What did Rich mean when he often said that he was "homeless?"
