An Arrow Pointing To Heaven::Chapter 6

  1. What's wrong with the "prosperity gospel?" Are we all meant to live a life of luxury just because we are Christians? And does paying our tithe mean we will reap great monetary rewards?
  2. Rich said, "I think life, by nature, is a struggle." Agree or disagree? What kind(s) of struggle(s)?
  3. Rich then went on to say, "Christianity doesn't answer all my questions or make me comfortable and happy. What it does do is give me a context for living." Does Christianity answer all of your questions? Does it make you comfortable and happy? And what is that "context for living?"
  4. Read aloud "Bound to Come Some Trouble." If you had to write an essay to a child, what wisdom would you impart in your final words?
  5. What was the source of Rich's pain? How did this shape his life and worldview?
  6. How did Rich's pain eventually become his calling?
  7. Why do you suppose Rich felt such intense loneliness?
  8. And why do you suppose Rich became disillusioned with the Christian music industry?
  9. Rich became painfully aware of his own imperfection. How did this impact his concert ministry?
  10. Why was Rich so torn between "competing interests?"
  11. Read aloud the lyrics to "Damascus Road" on pp. 145-146. How do you think his broken engagement affected these lyrics?
  12. Now try to tie all of these things together and explain how and why Rich did not believe in the prosperity gospel.
