An Arrow Pointing To Heaven::Chapter 6
- What's wrong with the "prosperity gospel?" Are we all meant to live a life of luxury just because we are Christians? And does paying our tithe mean we will reap great monetary rewards?
- Rich said, "I think life, by nature, is a struggle." Agree or disagree? What kind(s) of struggle(s)?
- Rich then went on to say, "Christianity doesn't answer all my questions or make me comfortable and happy. What it does do is give me a context for living." Does Christianity answer all of your questions? Does it make you comfortable and happy? And what is that "context for living?"
- Read aloud "Bound to Come Some Trouble." If you had to write an essay to a child, what wisdom would you impart in your final words?
- What was the source of Rich's pain? How did this shape his life and worldview?
- How did Rich's pain eventually become his calling?
- Why do you suppose Rich felt such intense loneliness?
- And why do you suppose Rich became disillusioned with the Christian music industry?
- Rich became painfully aware of his own imperfection. How did this impact his concert ministry?
- Why was Rich so torn between "competing interests?"
- Read aloud the lyrics to "Damascus Road" on pp. 145-146. How do you think his broken engagement affected these lyrics?
- Now try to tie all of these things together and explain how and why Rich did not believe in the prosperity gospel.
